Ayar Labs raises $155 million funding

Ayar Labs, a startup developing optical interconnect technology, has secured significant investments from major chip manufacturers Nvidia, AMD, and TSMC. The company aims to replace traditional copper interconnects with more efficient optical solutions to meet the growing demands of AI infrastructure. The rapid expansion of AI has brought challenges to data movement within its infrastructure.

Copper interconnects are struggling to keep up with the demands of complex AI models, leading to inefficiencies in performance, energy consumption, and scalability. Ayar Labs recently completed a $155 million Series D funding round, bringing its total funding to $370 million and valuation past $1 billion. This financing will accelerate the high-volume manufacturing of their in-package optical interconnects designed to replace electrical I/O and overcome copper’s limitations.

Optical interconnects streamline AI infrastructure

The optical I/O technology eliminates traditional bottlenecks by enabling data movement at speeds required for large-scale AI workloads. It reduces latency, power consumption, and operational costs, optimizing AI infrastructure.

Mark Wade, CEO and co-founder of Ayar Labs, stated, “The leading GPU providers – AMD and Nvidia – and semiconductor foundries – GlobalFoundries, Intel Foundry, and TSMC – combined with the backing of Advent, Light Street, and our other investors underscore the potential of our optical I/O technology to redefine the future of AI infrastructure.”

With AI infrastructure projected to attract over $1 trillion in investment over the next decade, Ayar Labs hopes to play a pivotal role in shaping its future. The company has shipped around 15,000 units of its TeraPHY optics transport and SuperNova laser source to select customers so far, but expects this number to grow to more than 100 million units annually by 2028. The latest funding will allow Ayar Labs to expand its manufacturing capabilities and boost customer engagements.

The investments by Nvidia, AMD, and Intel suggest these companies are preparing to deploy TeraPHY optics transport and SuperNova laser sources in their compute engines, while also keeping a close eye on Ayar Labs’ developments and potentially being early adopters of its technology.
