Educators navigate AI’s ethical challenges

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has sparked a paradox among educators. Many teachers are concerned about students using AI to cheat or take shortcuts in their learning. At the same time, these same educators are increasingly relying on AI tools themselves to save time on tasks like grading essays and tutoring struggling students.

This tension has raised difficult ethical questions. Is it fair for teachers to use AI to grade student essays if they have prohibited students from using AI to write them? School leaders are grappling with these dilemmas as they face a flood of marketing claims about how AI could “transform,” “personalize,” and “accelerate” learning.

Navigating AI’s educational paradox

A recent ChatGPT workshop for teachers in Walla Walla, Washington, highlights the growing interest in and reliance on these tools. AI is already being used by the majority of teachers and students,” said Jennifer Carolan, a former history teacher and founder of Reach Capital, a venture capital firm that invests in AI learning tools.

However, as AI technology works its way into schools, some educators are worried that tech companies are investing heavily in AI applications that disrupt the human relationships central to teaching and learning. They argue that resources should instead be directed towards creating tools that ease the bureaucratic burdens that shift adults’ attention away from children. As AI continues to evolve, educators and school leaders will need to navigate the delicate balance of leveraging its benefits while addressing the ethical and relational concerns that come with its use.
