The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detailed how one of its operatives was tragically killed by a suspected internet fraudster. According to a statement released by the EFCC on Sunday, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Salisu was killed during an operation at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka, Anambra State, on the early morning of January 17.
The operation aimed to arrest several individuals suspected of internet fraud. The statement reveals that one of the suspects, Joshua Ikechukwu, shot Mr. Salisu, who was part of a team of investigators conducting the raid.
The operation, duly documented in accordance with operational protocols at the Anambra State Command Headquarters and Area Command of the Nigeria Police, initially proceeded smoothly. During the raid, 37 suspects were arrested at a two-story building where Ikechukwu resided. However, Ikechukwu, who saw the investigators via a CCTV camera at his doorpost, refused to open his door despite their identification and requests for entry.
Instead, he opened fire, killing Mr.

Preliminary investigations indicated that Ikechukwu was involved in coding and online medical supplies of suspicious legitimacy. Authorities recovered two laptops, iPads, and several recording devices from his apartment, corroborating his involvement in internet fraud. Ikechukwu is currently in police custody and will be brought to trial.
The EFCC expressed deep concern over misleading narratives circulating on social media regarding the incident, emphasizing the gravity of Salisu’s death while on official duty. The Commission condemned any rationalization of the criminal act and called for respect for the grieving family and nation. The EFCC also cautioned the public about the increasing dangers associated with internet fraudsters, who are now known to engage in more hazardous activities, including carrying arms, kidnapping, and ritual killings.
The Commission urged the public to remain vigilant and not to underestimate the threat posed by these criminals. The EFCC remains steadfast in its mission to eradicate internet fraud and corruption in Nigeria and vows to respond forcefully to any attacks on its officers. The Commission acknowledged the loss of an officer committed to serving the nation and appreciated the support and condolences extended by sister agencies and well-meaning individuals during this difficult time.
