Elon Musk finds unlikely allies in Washington

Elon Musk has found surprising support in Washington as a growing number of prominent Democratic lawmakers voice approval for his latest initiatives. Musk, now co-leading Donald Trump’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency, has introduced controversial plans to close entire agencies and terminate thousands of civil service jobs. While these measures have raised alarms among many, some Democrats see an opportunity to cut defense spending, reduce healthcare costs, and eliminate bureaucratic red tape.

“Defense contractors have been fleecing the American people for far too long,” said Ro Khanna, a Democratic congressman from California. Khanna expressed his willingness to collaborate with Musk to curb wasteful Pentagon spending. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman also praised Musk, stating that the Tesla CEO had “made our economy and our nation better.”

Despite Musk’s prominent role in Trump’s administration and his support for global right-wing causes, which have largely alienated him from the left, some lawmakers are keen on exploring areas of collaboration.

Musk gains unexpected Democratic support

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, known for his progressive stance, noted that Musk was “right” to focus on defense spending. Certain Democrats have also formed a Doge caucus in the House, indicating their interest in Musk’s agenda.

“Anyone who thinks there aren’t opportunities to make government more efficient and effective is not living in the real world,” remarked Val Hoyle from Oregon, who attended the inaugural caucus meeting. However, Democrats have set clear boundaries on what they are willing to support. Khanna emphasized that he would fiercely oppose any cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and programs like Medicare, Social Security, and veteran benefits.

Don Moynihan, a public policy professor at the University of Michigan, pointed out that without cutting from these protected areas, Musk’s aim to slash $2 trillion from the federal budget “doesn’t really add up.”

The dynamics in Washington continue to evolve as Elon Musk gains new allies and the second Trump administration firms up its priorities. The coming months will reveal whether these unexpected alliances can indeed bring about significant changes in government efficiency and spending.
