Elon Musk has announced plans to revamp his chatbot, Grok, stating that the AI model is currently trained on “too much garbage.” He intends to use Grok to rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge, adding missing information and deleting errors. Subsequently, he will retrain Grok’s latest model on this new base of refined knowledge. We will use Grok 3.5 (maybe we should call it 4), which has advanced reasoning, to rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge,” Musk wrote on X.

Far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data,” he added. Musk has long aimed to create products, like the rebranded Twitter and Grok, free from what he perceives as harmful mainstream constraints. Previously, it was reported that Grok was being trained to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT by addressing more contentious topics.

On Saturday, Musk invited X users to respond to his post with examples of “divisive facts” that could be used in Grok’s retraining. Gary Marcus, an AI critic and professor emeritus at New York University, compared Musk’s effort to rewriting history to fit personal beliefs.

Elon plans to retrain Grok

“Straight out of 1984. You couldn’t get Grok to align with your own personal beliefs, so you are going to rewrite history to make it conform to your views,” Marcus wrote on X in response to Musk. A revamped Grok could have real-world impacts.

In May, it was reported that as Musk stepped back from his work in Washington, DC, to refocus on his various companies, plans were in motion to expand Grok’s use in analyzing government data. A source said that officials in the Department of Homeland Security had been encouraged to use it even though it hadn’t been officially approved. In May, Grok faced criticism after an “unauthorized modification” to its backend led the bot to frequently refer to “white genocide” in South Africa.

The company swiftly resolved the issue, conducting a “thorough investigation” and implementing measures to enhance Grok’s transparency and reliability. xAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
