Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, and Nick Candy, the party’s treasurer, met with tech billionaire Elon Musk at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida. The meeting took place amid rumors that Musk may be planning a substantial donation to the Reform UK party, potentially amounting to $100 million. In a statement released after the meeting, Farage and Candy said, “We had a great meeting with Elon Musk for an hour yesterday.
We learned a great deal about the Trump ground game and will have ongoing discussions on other areas.”
They added, “We only have one more chance left to save the West, and we can do great things together. Our thanks also to President Trump for allowing us to use Mar-a-Lago for this historic meeting. The special relationship is alive and well.”
Some leading businessmen and Conservative Party officials believe that any potential donation from Musk could be driven by his antagonism towards Labour Party leader Keir Starmer.
Late last month, Musk shared a post on social media expressing support for Reform UK’s prospects in the next general election, captioning it with the word “yes.”
However, when questioned by ITV News about the potential $100 million donation, Musk denied the claim.
Farage’s potential fundraising boost
Asked if he was planning to give Reform UK £80 million, he replied, “no.” The inquiry took place as Musk arrived on Capitol Hill in Washington to meet with American politicians, following his appointment by Trump to lead a new government efficiency commission in the US.
Farage has previously described Musk as “very supportive,” commenting, “He thinks that if Reform do well in the UK, we can bring about the same kind of change that he intends to do with Donald Trump in America.”
The meeting follows closely on the heels of Candy’s pledge to raise over £40 million for Reform UK, significantly surpassing previous fundraising efforts during general election campaigns. Candy recently defected from the Conservative Party and was appointed as Reform UK’s treasurer. Farage has also been actively involved in US politics, having visited the US ahead of the November 5 Presidential Election to show support for Trump.
He appeared at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania wearing a MAGA hat and was present at the election night party in Florida, where Musk briefly joined Trump behind the scenes. This meeting with Musk is seen as a potential step toward Farage’s aim of becoming a mediator between the UK and the US. Farage explained to his supporters, “It seems to me that with a Labour Party and a Republican Party who disagree on so many things—who are such fundamentally different people—that I might be useful as an interlocutor, unofficially, behind the scenes, to try and help mend some of those fences.”
