In 2024, artificial intelligence tools continued to make significant strides in assisting professionals across various industries, including journalism. As a journalist who frequently writes about AI, I had the opportunity to try over 15 AI tools throughout the year. Among these, five tools stood out for their usefulness and became regular parts of my workflow.
Google’s AI Overviews feature proved to be a valuable tool for quickly finding answers to specific questions, such as company contact information or product release dates. By providing AI-generated answers directly in the search interface, along with links to relevant sources, this tool streamlined the search process and made fact-checking more efficient. Another noteworthy tool was NotebookLM’s Audio Overview, which generates a 10-minute podcast-style discussion based on user-uploaded materials, including articles, YouTube links, and documents.
This personalized approach to digesting information was particularly helpful for deep learning and presenting information in a conversational manner.
Essential tools for AI-assisted journalism
ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode allowed for engaging voice interactions with the chatbot, making it easier to ask complex questions or when typing a lengthy query was inconvenient.
Although the voice responses may not be as detailed as written answers, the human-like conversational element impressed both myself and my family members. Otter.ai, a live transcription service, significantly improved my efficiency by enabling quick searches through recordings to locate specific discussions and providing real-time transcription. The free version offers 300 minutes per month with a 30-minute limit per session, and the tool also generates summaries, outlines, and action items from the recordings.
Lastly, Amazon’s chatbot Rufus excelled in providing contextual shopping assistance, offering useful information and reviews for various products. While not as universally applicable as other AI tools, Rufus simplified the process of locating items in my Amazon purchase history, making reordering products a breeze. As AI continues to integrate into more aspects of daily life, these tools demonstrate the exciting potential for artificial intelligence to enhance everyday activities and boost productivity.
It is important to remember that AI is designed to complement and enhance human abilities rather than replace them entirely.
