Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, has expressed concerns about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) by rogue states and individuals. Speaking at the AI Action Summit in Paris, Schmidt warned of a “Bin Laden scenario” where AI could be exploited to cause significant harm to innocent people. “The real fears that I have are not the ones that most people talk about AI – I talk about extreme risk,” Schmidt said.

He specifically mentioned countries like North Korea, Iran, and Russia, which might adopt AI technology for malicious purposes. Schmidt emphasized the need for government oversight of private companies developing advanced AI products. “It’s really important that governments understand what we’re doing and keep their eye on us.

We’re not arguing that we should unilaterally be able to do these things without oversight; we think it should be regulated,” he stated. However, Schmidt also cautioned against over-regulation, which could stifle innovation in the field.

He supported the Biden administration’s export controls on microchips essential for developing cutting-edge AI products. The summit concluded with the signing of a joint agreement aimed at promoting the responsible development of AI technology. China participated in the agreement –despite its strict control of internet access and censorship practices.

The US and UK, however, did not sign the agreement, raising concerns about potential future AI abuses. Since leaving Google, Schmidt has invested heavily in AI startups through his family office, Hillspire. Since 2019, Hillspire has invested in 22 AI startups, pouring more than $5 billion into the sector.

This includes investments in leading AI firms like Anthropic, Holistic AI, and SandboxAQ. Schmidt’s warnings highlight the dual nature of AI: its potential for innovation and progress, and its dangers if misused without proper oversight. As AI continues to advance rapidly, it is crucial to address the ethical and security challenges posed by this technology to ensure its responsible development and use.
