Counterplay Games, the developer behind the game Godfall, has reportedly shut down. The studio ceased operations on January 13, 2025. A developer from Jackalyptic shared that their collaboration with Counterplay Games had to end due to the unexpected closure.
The developer said, “Over the past six months, our project at Jackalyptic has been significantly impacted by the world-class developers at Counterplay Games. From the very first day, they approached the project as if it were their own. Unfortunately, we were unable to continue our partnership into the new year, and [Counterplay Games] was disbanded.”
The closure marks a significant loss, as Counterplay Games had been involved in notable projects.
The studio had recently expanded Godfall to various platforms after its initial launch as a PlayStation 5 and Epic Games Store exclusive. Counterplay Games is not the only studio to face challenges in early 2025.

Toadman Interactive, known for its support on games such as the Warhammer Vermintide series, closed on January 9. Its parent company, Enad Global 7, stated that the studio failed to secure new work-for-hire contracts at a necessary pace, leading to its shutdown. FreeJam, the developer of Robocraft 2, also shut down on January 9.
The studio indicated through a public message that it was unable to continue development or sustain ongoing projects. As a result, both Robocraft titles and CardLife will be sunset, with Robocraft 2 already delisted from Steam. The video game industry has faced significant challenges over the past few years.
The trend does not seem to be reversing as 2025 begins. The closures of Counterplay Games, Toadman Interactive, and FreeJam highlight the ongoing difficulties that many studios are encountering in today’s competitive environment.
