Google has introduced a redesign for the albums view in Google Photos, bringing it in line with the Material 3 Expressive style. The update, which is currently available on Android, also includes the ability to share albums using QR codes. The new design replaces the previous “Add description” field and buttons for sharing, adding photos, and ordering photos with a streamlined Material 3 Expressive toolbar.

This toolbar consolidates sharing, adding photos, and editing albums into a more user-friendly interface. The edit function, which was previously hidden in the overflow menu, is now more easily accessible and features new icons. The “Sort photos” button has also been moved to the top bar for better visibility.

In the updated “Edit” view, users will find a docked toolbar that enables them to add photos, text, and locations.

There are also options to edit the album description, highlights, and album cover images from two new cards at the top of this view.

While the redesign incorporates several Material 3 Expressive components, the full bleed design for album covers has not yet been implemented. The overall goal of the redesign is to provide a more streamlined and organized interface for users. In addition to the design changes, Google Photos now supports sharing albums via QR codes, a feature that was announced last week.

The share sheet includes a new option that uses a Material 3 shape with the Google Photos logo at the center for QR code sharing. This update demonstrates Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance the user experience by integrating Material 3 Expressive elements into their apps. Users can expect further updates to the rest of the Google Photos app to roll out later this month.
