Google Pixel update still misses dark theme fix

Google has released the latest update for its Pixel devices, but users are reporting that the automatic dark theme feature remains broken. The issue was first introduced in the March 2025 update and persists despite subsequent updates. When enabled, the automatic dark theme is supposed to switch the device to dark mode between sunset and sunrise based on the user’s location.

However, users have found that the feature isn’t working as intended, especially after manually adjusting the theme. The problem has been reported on multiple devices, including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Google has yet to provide an official fix for the issue, leaving users frustrated.

Some users have discovered a temporary workaround by manually creating a “Mode” for automating the dark theme, but this is not a permanent solution.

Ongoing issues with dark theme scheduling

The March update was otherwise significant for Pixel users, with the announcement of the budget-friendly Pixel 9a.

The device features the same Google Tensor G4 processor as the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro, promising efficient performance at a starting price of $499. The Pixel 9a’s release was delayed from March 26 to April 10 in the US, Canada, and UK due to a “component quality issue,” with other regions following shortly after. The April software update addressed various issues, such as fingerprint recognition problems and screen brightness flickering during video streaming.

However, the dark mode scheduling bug remains unresolved. Users can enable dark mode settings by navigating to Settings > Display > Dark Theme > Schedule and selecting from custom timings, sunset to sunrise, or bedtime options. As Pixel users eagerly await an official fix for the automatic dark theme issue, Google has yet to directly address the problem or provide a timeline for a resolution.
