The melting of Greenland’s ice sheet is accelerating at an alarming rate. Recent research shows that the loss of ice could reach between 964 and 1735 gigatons per year by 2100 under high greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. This could lead to a potential sea level rise of up to one meter.

Three regional climate models have been used to predict these outcomes. “Greenland’s glaciers are melting at an alarming rate,” said Quentin Glaude, an engineer at the Montefiore Institute at the University of Liège (ULiège). The studies underscore the urgent need for improved climate models.

These models vary in their predictions due to differences in how they treat meltwater flow. When snow melts, some water infiltrates and refreezes, while the rest flows directly into the ocean.

Currently, Greenland contributes 25% to global sea level rise, or about 0.6 mm per year. “If the current trends continue, this contribution could surge up to one meter by 2100,” warned Xavier Fettweis, a climatologist at ULiège. This increase would expose millions of lives around the world to risks of flooding and submersion.

The research also emphasizes the need for policy action to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and protect vulnerable communities. The Walloon region’s high-performance computing infrastructure has facilitated this research, allowing for the simulation of complex climate interactions between ice, atmosphere, and oceans.
