Pete Hegseth, the Defense Secretary, had an unsecured internet line installed in his office at the Pentagon. This line, known as a “dirty” line in the IT industry, bypassed the Pentagon’s security protocols and connected directly to the public internet. Two people familiar with the matter told sources that Hegseth used this line to access Signal, an encrypted messaging app.

This has raised concerns about the potential exposure of sensitive defense information to hacking or surveillance. A senior U.S. official familiar with military network security explained that while other Pentagon offices have used such lines, particularly for monitoring otherwise blocked information or websites, the main advantage is that the user’s IP address would not be associated with the Defense Department.

However, using a “dirty” line can make users vulnerable to hacking and surveillance, and may not comply with federal recordkeeping laws. Hegseth’s use of Signal has come under scrutiny following revelations that he shared sensitive details in various chat groups, including one with his wife and brother, and another with President Donald Trump’s top national security officials. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated, “The defense secretary’s communications systems and channels are classified.

However, we can confirm that the Secretary has never used and does not currently use Signal on his government computer.”

This incident is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding Hegseth, who has faced bi-partisan questions about his handling of sensitive information and has narrowed his inner circle, contributing to the turmoil within the department. Despite this, Trump and other administration officials have expressed their full support for Hegseth, blaming disgruntled employees for leaking information to journalists. As officials and lawmakers seek to understand the risks and implications associated with the unsecured internet line in Hegseth’s office, the situation continues to unfold.
