The Hubble Space Telescope is celebrating its 35th anniversary in Earth orbit. NASA is releasing a stunning assortment of images recently captured by Hubble to mark this milestone. The images span from the planet Mars to star-forming regions and a neighboring galaxy.
Launched on April 24, 1990, Hubble remains the most well-recognized and scientifically productive telescope in history. It has made nearly 1.7 million observations, looking at approximately 55,000 astronomical targets. These discoveries have resulted in over 22,000 scientific papers and more than 1.3 million citations.
Hubble opened a new window to the universe when it launched 35 years ago,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, acting director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Its stunning imagery inspired people across the globe, and the data behind those images revealed surprises about everything from early galaxies to planets in our own solar system.
The mission faced an early challenge when a flaw was discovered in Hubble’s primary mirror.

Astronauts swiftly intervened with corrective optics during servicing missions from 1993 to 2009, ensuring Hubble could fulfill its potential. Hubble’s contributions include unveiling ancient galaxies, precisely measuring the universe’s expansion, and contributing to the discovery of dark energy, which earned the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. Its longevity allows astronomers to return to the same cosmic scenes multiple times to observe changes over decades.

One of Hubble’s most iconic images, the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16), has been reprocessed using the latest techniques to celebrate the anniversary.
The updated image highlights cold gas and dust layers, with Hubble’s visible and infrared cameras showing how radiation from hot, young stars illumines and erodes the massive tower. The Hubble Space Telescope, perched above Earth’s blurry atmosphere, has been transformative for the public’s perception of the cosmos.
