Maine launches Working Internet ASAP program

The Maine Connectivity Authority has launched a new program called “Working Internet ASAP” to provide internet access to the remaining 1.5% of homes and businesses in the state that still lack connectivity. The initiative will distribute Starlink satellite dishes from Elon Musk’s SpaceX company to eligible locations across Maine. The state will cover the cost of purchasing the Starlink equipment, which is estimated at around $600 per terminal, as well as shipping and professional installation.

However, the monthly service charge of $120 for unlimited data will be the responsibility of the individual subscribers. Maine’s decision to partner with Starlink came after a competitive bidding process conducted by the Maine Connectivity Authority over the summer. The total cost for the equipment alone could reach $5.4 million if all 9,000 eligible locations choose to participate in the program.

While the majority of the unserved areas are concentrated in Oxford, Aroostook, and Penobscot counties, there are still locations in every county across the state that lack internet access. Starting in November, eligible residents and businesses can apply for the Starlink satellites through a rolling application process.

Governor Janet Mills emphasized the importance of this initiative in achieving her goal of connecting all Mainers to the internet by the end of 2024. Andrew Butcher, President of the Maine Connectivity Authority, also stressed the need to ensure that no one is left in the “digital dark” while the infrastructure for future advancements is being built. The Working Internet ASAP program is one of several efforts by the state to increase internet access in Maine.
