Metronet customers across Iowa experienced a widespread internet and phone service outage that began late Monday night and continued into Tuesday morning. The disruption affected various businesses and organizations, including the Ames Community School District, which had to instruct parents to report student absences through an online portal due to the outage. According to Metronet, the outage was caused by two damaged lines.
The company’s technicians worked closely with the affected communities to restore service as quickly as possible. A spokesperson for Metronet clarified that the outage did not impact customers in Des Moines or West Des Moines. Reports from Downdetector, a website that tracks user-reported outages, showed that the issues began shortly before 11 p.m. on Monday and persisted into Tuesday morning.
The number of reports declined significantly around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, indicating that the services were being restored.
Metronet outage impacts Iowa businesses
Businesses affected by the outage included Ridge Stone Golf Club in Sheffield, 805 Pizza & Chicken in Hampton, and Jeff’s Pizza Shop in Ames.
The Ames Community School District later confirmed that their phone lines were operational again after the service was restored. In a statement addressing the outage, Metronet said, “Metronet customers in some of our Iowa service areas experienced a service outage that was resolved this morning. Unfortunately, service was disrupted due to two damaged lines.
Our technicians worked closely with the impacted communities to fully restore service as quickly as possible. We appreciate our customers’ patience and apologize for any inconvenience.”
The outage serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining resilient infrastructure to ensure the reliability of essential communication services. As communities increasingly rely on internet and phone services for daily operations, minimizing disruptions and quickly resolving issues becomes crucial for businesses, organizations, and individuals alike.
