Microsoft is rebranding its AI chatbot, Copilot, with a new name that has not been revealed to the public yet. This move is part of the company’s long history of rebranding products, which has often led to confusion among consumers. In the past, Microsoft has chosen complex names for its products, such as “Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Professional Edition” for a version of its mobile operating system.
The company has also rebranded its web browser from Internet Explorer to Edge after struggling to compete with newer browsers like Mozilla Firefox. Despite the mixed success of its rebranding efforts, Microsoft continues to invest heavily in AI technology. The company has optimized its Azure cloud platform for AI workloads, using cutting-edge GPUs designed for large language models and generative AI applications.
Microsoft has also secured strategic partnerships in various industries, such as Telkomsel, which uses Azure for AI internal compliance and customer service.
Microsoft’s history of product rebranding
However, it remains to be seen whether the rebranding of Copilot will help Microsoft compete with major AI players like ChatGPT and Gemini.
As a tech journalist, I had the opportunity to review one of the first Copilot-enabled laptops, the Envy x360 14-fc009na. While the dedicated Copilot key was initially more of an annoyance due to accidental presses, I found it useful for quickly summarizing news alerts and identifying the best sources to quote for news stories. However, I refrained from using AI for article enhancements due to corporate policies, and there were frequent hiccups in locating documents within our primary system at Future PLC.
The need to sign in with a 365 account for more detailed answers also posed a roadblock. Microsoft has announced its next step with upgraded “Copilot+ PCs” set to launch later in 2024, but concerns remain about how beneficial these devices will be for everyday users. While my usage of Copilot was limited, it could be a vital tool for those juggling vast amounts of information or needing additional polish on their work emails.
