Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, is reportedly considering stepping back from his political activities after a series of embarrassing missteps and widespread backlash. Sources familiar with Musk’s thinking suggest that he is ready to leave his role within the Trump administration due to growing frustration over increasing criticism. Musk’s tenure as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been marked by controversy and erratic decision-making.
Despite this, a senior White House official argued that DOGE has achieved historic success, citing the significant budget cut Musk made, reducing it from $2 trillion to $150 billion. However, the sentiment within the White House has grown more critical of Musk in recent weeks. A senior official described interactions with him as “sometimes like listening to really rusty nails on a chalkboard,” highlighting the increasing frustration with his approach.
Musk considers stepping down
Jared Isaacman, Trump’s pick for NASA administrator, distanced himself from Musk during a Senate hearing, emphasizing his commitment to NASA and the nation. Isaacman stated, “My loyalty is to this nation, the space agency, and their world-changing mission.
They’re the contractors, and NASA is the customer. They work for us, not the other way around.”
While Musk might attribute his troubles to attacks from the left, it seems the discontent may also be coming from within the White House itself. Recent polling data suggests that Musk’s unpopularity and Tesla’s decline cannot be attributed to paid protesters, debunking his excuse and highlighting the negative impact of his political involvement.
As Musk considers stepping back from politics, the Trump administration continues to face various challenges, including controversies surrounding Trump’s pick to head the IRS, allegations of corruption, legal battles over deportation policies, and concerns about the future of Social Security.
