Elon Musk has expressed regret over his controversial stunt at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February, where he wielded a chainsaw on stage. The incident occurred when Argentinian President Javier Milei handed Musk the chainsaw backstage, which Musk then took on stage and declared as a “chainsaw for bureaucracy.”
In a recent exchange on X, formerly known as Twitter, Musk admitted that the stunt “lacked empathy” and might not have been the best idea. He was responding to a user, Jim Spradlin, who criticized Musk’s focus on dramatic gestures.
Musk conceded, stating, “Valid point. Milei gave me the chainsaw backstage and I ran with it, but, in retrospect, it lacked empathy.”
The chainsaw incident at CPAC was seen by many as a symbolic gesture against bureaucratic inefficiency. However, Musk’s recent comments suggest he is reconsidering the impact of such actions.
Simultaneously, Musk has been vocal about his opposition to President Donald Trump’s spending bill, which he has criticized for being “utterly insane and destructive.” The bill, which among other things, would cut an electric vehicle tax credit that has benefited Musk’s company, Tesla, has been a significant point of contention between Musk and Trump.
Musk reflects on CPAC chainsaw stunt
Musk’s criticism led to a public fallout with Trump, though tensions appeared to have calmed down until Musk reignited the debate.
He described the bill as a threat to future industries, including those related to electric vehicles, and suggested forming a new political party to oppose lawmakers supporting the bill. President Trump, in response, hinted at reconsidering government subsidies for Musk’s ventures and made cryptic comments about “DOGE,” though it remains unclear what he was referring to. Musk has so far refrained from escalating the situation further, stating on X, “So tempting to escalate this.
So, so tempting. But I will refrain for now.”
Neither Musk nor representatives for Milei responded to requests for comments on the matter. This story highlights the ongoing friction between two of the most influential figures in the business and political arenas today.
