Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, recently shared his vision for establishing a self-sustaining civilization on Mars.

In an interview with Fox News’ Jesse Watters, Musk emphasized the importance of developing Mars as a “life insurance” policy for humanity. “Mars is life insurance for all life collectively.

Eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the sun.

The sun is gradually expanding, so we need to be a multi-planet civilization because Earth will be incinerated,” Musk stated. Musk explained that his goal for Mars goes beyond merely landing on the planet.

Mars as humanity’s life insurance

He aims to create a self-sustaining city that can survive independently from Earth.

“The fundamental fork in the road of destiny [is] that Mars is sufficiently self-sustaining and can grow by itself if the resupply ships from Earth stop coming for any reason,” he said.

The SpaceX CEO also highlighted that if Mars cannot survive without continuous support from Earth, then the endeavor hasn’t truly secured life insurance for humanity. SpaceX hopes to launch a Starship to Mars by late 2026. If successful, Musk predicts that human landings on Mars could begin as early as 2029.

Musk’s vision for humanity’s future involves not just surviving but thriving on multiple planets, ensuring that our species can endure cosmic and planetary challenges far into the future.
