Elon Musk has sparked controversy by calling for the release of Tommy Robinson and accusing Labour leader Keir Starmer of failing to prosecute child rapists in Oldham. Musk posted on X, tagging far-right activist Robinson, who is currently serving a jail sentence for contempt of court. Musk’s posts included multiple messages supporting Robinson and attacking Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips over their responses to child exploitation scandals in Rochdale and Oldham.
He highlighted that from 2008 to 2013, Starmer was the head of the Crown Prosecution Service, during which time he claims serious crimes were inadequately prosecuted. Musk also targeted Jess Phillips, stating she “deserved to be in prison” for her stance that it was the responsibility of Oldham council, and not the national government, to call an inquiry into child exploitation.
Musk criticizes Labour over scandals
Musk’s intervention in British politics has angered many MPs, who are urging the government to stop using X. Several ministers believe this incident should prompt the government to exit Musk’s platform, although some caution that doing so could risk international diplomatic issues due to Musk’s influence with the incoming Trump administration. The spokesperson for Oldham council commented, “Survivors sit at the heart of our work to end child sexual exploitation.
Whatever happens in terms of future inquiries, we have promised them that their wishes will be paramount.”
This heated exchange has reignited discussions about the impact of figures like Musk on political discourse and their potential influence on political parties. It has also raised questions about the future engagement of UK governmental bodies with X, Musk’s social media platform.
