Elon Musk’s straight-arm gesture at President Trump’s inauguration event has sparked controversy and debate. The billionaire slapped his right hand on his chest before shooting his arm diagonally upward, palm facing down, twice during his speech. The gesture resembled the salute used in Nazi Germany and fascist Italy.
While some commentators called it a “Roman salute” or a “heartfelt” expression of joy, others dismissed it as merely clumsy. The Anti-Defamation League, which campaigns against anti-Semitism, describes the Nazi salute as “raising an outstretched right arm with the palm down” and ranks it as “the most common white supremacist hand sign in the world.” However, after Musk’s stiff-arm gesture, the organization called it “an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.”
Right-wing extremists celebrated Musk’s gesture, despite ambiguity surrounding his intentions. White supremacist groups and alt-right commentators expressed their support on social media platforms.
Musk’s follow-up posts did little to dispel suspicions, as he mocked the criticisms and attacked those drawing comparisons to Hitler. Experts and watchdogs have varying opinions on the matter.
Musk’s controversial gesture sparks debate
Some, like the Anti-Defamation League, urged calm and cautioned against jumping to conclusions. Others, such as Kurt Braddock of American University, insisted the gesture was unmistakable and highlighted its impact on the extreme right. In Europe, Musk’s gesture stirred considerable outrage.
In Italy, an effigy of Musk was hanged upside down at a historically charged site, while in France, over 80 associations left Musk’s social media platform, X, due to the gesture and its implications. The controversy has led to more than 100 Reddit communities banning users from posting links to X in protest. These subreddits, ranging from sports and gaming to city and country-based communities, have a combined membership of millions.
While some subreddits refuse to engage in censorship, the bans may significantly impact referrals to X, especially from sports-related communities. The debate over Musk’s gesture underscores the broader tensions surrounding his actions and words in a highly polarized political landscape. As the controversy continues, it remains to be seen how it will affect Musk’s reputation and the future of his social media platform.
