Musk’s X blocked sensitive Vance document

Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, worked with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to prevent the spread of a sensitive document about JD Vance, a Republican running mate. The campaign reached out to X regarding a 271-page document that contained personal information about Vance, including his social security number. X responded by blocking links to the material and suspending the account of journalist Ken Klippenstein, who had published the document on his Substack in September.

Klippenstein linked the document to a hack of the Trump campaign earlier this year, which the FBI attributed to Iranian actors. While several media outlets received documents from the hack, many chose not to publish them, in contrast to the extensive coverage given to hacked documents from Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. The incident highlights Musk’s strong support for Trump as he attempts a political comeback after his 2020 loss to Joe Biden.

Musk’s support for Trump evident

Musk, who claimed to be an advocate of free speech when he acquired Twitter in 2022, has shown a clear alignment with Trump’s campaign. He was recently seen at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, where he made controversial statements supporting Trump and criticizing Democrats, specifically Vice President Kamala Harris.

Klippenstein’s account was eventually restored following coverage from major outlets like the New York Times. He accused Musk of using his influence to exert political control, emphasizing that social media corporations should not have the power to determine what information is suitable for the public. Musk’s political involvement appears to be deepening; he is expected to participate in future Trump rallies and has funded America PAC, a political action committee that has spent around $80 million to support Trump in critical swing states.

The Trump campaign’s interaction with X and the subsequent actions raise questions about the platform’s impartiality under Musk’s ownership, especially as Musk continues to advocate for what he terms a “free, digital public square.”
