The Perseid meteor shower dazzled stargazers as “shooting stars” rained over the ancient Stonehenge in a breathtaking image captured by astrophotographer Josh Dury. This stunning display was just one of the many space spectacles that came to Earth in style in 2024, including global auroras and a total solar eclipse witnessed by tens of millions. Japan made history with its first successful moon landing when the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) spacecraft reached the lunar surface on January 19.
Despite touching down on its face, the lander survived three freezing lunar nights before losing contact with Earth in April. A small robot named Sora-Q accompanied the lander and took a stunning shot of the stricken spacecraft. The Hubble and James Webb space telescopes captured an eerie image of the colliding galaxies IC 2163 and NGC 2207, which appeared like bloodshot eyes gazing back into the cosmos.
These active star factories will eventually merge into a single giant structure. Houston-based Intuitive Machines’ lunar lander, Odysseus or “Odie,” successfully touched down near the lunar south pole on February 22, marking the first private spacecraft to reach the moon. On its way, Odie captured a celebratory selfie from orbit with Earth in the background.
NASA’s Juno spacecraft provided the closest view of Jupiter’s moon Io in decades, revealing Loki Patera, a 127-mile-long lava lake. The detailed image showed a raft of cooling lava at the lake’s center, surrounded by molten magma.
NASA’s lunar milestones and celestial wonders
In May, NASA scientists revealed a cometary globule structure located 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Puppis, nicknamed “God’s hand.” The image, captured with the Dark Energy Camera on the Blanco Telescope in Chile, shows a massive, star-forming cloud of gas with a comet-like trail. Researchers used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer in Chile to capture the first zoomed-in image of an individual star outside our galaxy, known as WOH G64. This massive star may be on the verge of a supernova explosion.
During a rare total solar eclipse on April 8, solar prominences, huge looping tendrils of plasma, were spotted emanating from the sun’s surface. These pink structures appeared due to the sun’s hydrogen emitting reddish light at high temperatures. Private space company Astroscale captured the first close-up photo of an individual piece of space debris in low Earth orbit, showing the spent upper stage of a Japanese H-IIA rocket that has been circling Earth since 2009.
Astroscale plans to remove this space junk using a robotic arm in a future mission. Billionaire and private astronaut Jared Isaacman conducted the first commercial spacewalk in history in September. Emerging partway from a Crew Dragon capsule, Isaacman tested a new SpaceX spacesuit while the Earth slowly turned below.
This was the crowning moment of the Polaris Dawn project, a private space mission funded by Isaacman in partnership with SpaceX. These images and events from 2024 highlight the incredible achievements and breathtaking beauty of space exploration, reminding us of our place in the vast universe.
