ChatGPT has taken the world by storm since its launch. The AI chatbot, created by OpenAI, began as a tool to help with writing essays and code. But it has evolved a lot over the past year.

In 2024, OpenAI had some big changes. It launched new AI models and some top executives left the company. OpenAI has also faced legal battles.

It has been accused of copyright infringement. There have been debates about its switch to a for-profit model. Some think OpenAI is losing ground in the AI race.

Despite these challenges, OpenAI is working to stay competitive. It is raising one of the largest funding rounds ever. And it keeps innovating with new features and updates.

In April 2025, OpenAI released GPT-4.1. But tests show it is less reliable than earlier versions. The company said GPT-4.1 is not a cutting-edge model. So it will not release a separate report on it.

Questions have come up about OpenAI’s testing methods. Its o3 model scored much lower on a benchmark test than claimed. OpenAI first said it solved 25% of problems on the FrontierMath set.

But it only got 10%. OpenAI launched a Flex processing option. This lets users access AI models for less money, but with slower responses.

It is in beta for the o3 and o4-mini models.

These are good for non-production tasks.

The company put in a new system to watch for biological and chemical threats. This aims to stop models from giving dangerous advice. OpenAI added a “library” section in ChatGPT.

This makes it easier for all users to access AI-generated images. The company may change its safety rules if rivals release risky AI models without similar safeguards. OpenAI is making a social media network.

But it is not clear if it will be a separate app or part of ChatGPT. The company will remove its GPT-4.5 model from the API in July. Developers must switch to GPT-4.1 by July 14.

OpenAI updated ChatGPT to remember past user chats. This personalizes future interactions. The feature is rolling out first to Pro and Plus users in certain regions.

OpenAI is offering its premium ChatGPT Plus subscription free to college students in the U.S. and Canada. This gives access to advanced features like the GPT-4o model, image generation, and voice interaction. Since launching on March 31, ChatGPT users have made over 700 million images.

But the estimated running costs of the o3 model may be higher than first thought. Due to high demand, OpenAI is having capacity issues. This may delay product releases.

The company plans to release an “open” AI language model in the coming months. It will include developer events to get feedback and show prototypes. ChatGPT continues to evolve with new updates and features.

OpenAI remains committed to innovation as it navigates the competitive AI landscape.
