So What’s The Big Deal with the Oppo Find N5 Foldable ? A Lot.
After spending a few minutes with it, here’s a glimpse into my early impressions of the device. Oppo is careful to use the “book-style” disclaimer because, when open, the Find N5 isn’t quite as thin as other devices on the market. However, it is comfortably thinner than its competitors when closed, benefiting from having only two panels to fold, not three.
The Find N5 is barely thicker than its USB-C port, making it feel exceptionally thin. Despite this slender profile, the phone feels solid and sturdy. The company has also made efforts to reduce the visibility of the display’s crease.
While the crease is present, it only catches the light at specific angles and is difficult to feel with your finger. This almost imperceptible crease likely won’t bother most users. The Find N5 will be available in black and white models, with a purple vegan (fake) leather variant exclusive to the Chinese market.
The device runs on Oppo’s ColorOS Android skin, meaning users can expect robust multitasking features similar to those found in previous models. Due to launch next week in China and internationally, the Find N5 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. It boasts a full array of IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 water-resistance certifications and includes wireless and wired charging options.
Although there’s no US launch date, a version with a OnePlus logo may eventually be introduced to the American market, following the pattern set by previous Oppo models. Honor, Google, Xiaomi, and Vivo all launched new folding phones last year aimed at competing with Samsung. The challenge was not just to match Samsung but to surpass the foldables from the previous year.
Launching in the US, these devices set a high standard in the industry. Honor released the slimmest folding phone ever, and Google introduced a revamped model. Both devices delivered impressive performances, but conspicuously absent were OnePlus and its sister company, Oppo.
Oppo’s thinnest foldable phone debut
Rather than rushing a launch, Oppo chose to wait. Oppo has been steadily teasing features of its anticipated new folding phone, the Oppo Find N5 and the wait appears to be well worth it.
The excitement is further heightened by the anticipated US launch of the phone as the OnePlus Open 2. Here’s why the Oppo Find N5 is so highly anticipated and what it means for other folding phones on the market. Oppo CEO Pete Lau has been building excitement around the Find N5 on social media, particularly emphasizing its thickness.
The Find N5 is touted as the thinnest folding phone ever. Last year, the Honor Magic V3 held the title of thinnest foldable, measuring just 4.3mm at its thinnest point when unfolded. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 measures 5.6mm, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold measures 5.1mm.
The Oppo Find N5 is expected to come in around 4.2mm thick or even thinner, marking a significant improvement. This could set a new standard for the competition. Durability has always been a concern among potential folding phone customers, but considerable progress has been made since the first Galaxy Fold.
The Honor Magic V3 offers some water resistance with an IPX8 rating but lacks dust resistance. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has an IP48 rating, providing strong water resistance and limited dust resistance. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold features an IP68 rating, similar to non-folding phones.
The Oppo Find N5 is expected to feature an IPX9 rating, offering resistance to water and high-pressure jets. This level of durability would be exceptional for a folding phone. In addition to its thinness and durability, the Find N5 is rumored to boast several other standout features.
It will likely include a 6.85-inch LTPO display with 2K resolution and a dynamic refresh rate. A Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset will power the device and may feature 16GB of RAM. A 6,000mAh battery using Silicon Carbon technology is also anticipated, along with 80W wired charging.
Notably, folding phones often feature inferior cameras compared to their non-folding counterparts. However, the Find N5 could change this with a rumored triple Hasselblad camera system featuring a periscope telephoto lens. The Oppo Find N5 is expected to challenge every flagship folding phone on the market.
Although it may not launch directly in the US, it will likely be rebranded as the OnePlus Open 2. This device could offer better battery life, an improved camera, faster charging, and superior durability compared to current folding phones. The excitement around the Oppo Find N5 is due to its potential to bridge the gap between folding and non-folding phones, reducing the compromises consumers must make.
This could stimulate greater competition among folding phones, setting a new standard in the industry. The launch is just a few weeks away, and anticipation is high for what could be the best foldable phone of the year.
