The City of Philadelphia is taking steps to address the growing challenges posed by climate change. The Office of Sustainability (OOS) is inviting residents to contribute to the development of a new Climate Resilience Plan by sharing their experiences and concerns through a citywide survey. The survey, available in eight languages, aims to gather input from a diverse range of Philadelphia residents about local climate and environmental justice issues.
It focuses on planning for heat waves, flooding, and extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. By participating in the survey, residents can share their knowledge of community values, priorities, and the effectiveness of local government in addressing these challenges. The survey also provides an opportunity for residents to inform the city about urgent needs and long-term priorities for communities most affected by climate and environmental injustices.
The information collected through the survey will directly inform and guide future City policies and research related to building a stronger, more resilient Philadelphia.
Shaping Philadelphia’s climate resilience
The OOS emphasizes the importance of creating an equitable, informed, and community-centered Climate Resilience Plan that will guide policies and programs to protect infrastructure, people, health, livelihoods, and the environment from the impacts of climate change.
The survey is part of a broader effort by the City of Philadelphia to address climate challenges and create a sustainable and equitable environmental strategy. Other initiatives include the “Climate Justice in Lenapehoking” mural, a 400-foot wide artwork created by lead muralist Eurhi Jones and collaborators through Mural Arts Philadelphia, which depicts past and present injustices and hopes for the future, symbolizing the city’s commitment to climate justice. Residents are encouraged to participate in the survey and stay involved in the process of developing the Climate Resilience Plan.
The survey takes approximately 10-20 minutes to complete and is accessible through the Office of Sustainability’s webpage. As Philadelphia faces a convergence of environmental threats, including heavy rainfall, flooding, and extreme heat, the City recognizes the pressing need for local resilience and preparation. By involving the community in the planning process, Philadelphia aims to create a more sustainable and equitable future for all its residents.
