The PlayStation Network (PSN) experienced a widespread outage over the weekend, leaving gamers unable to access online services for nearly 20 hours. The outage began on Friday evening around 6:30 PM EST, affecting most of the global player base during peak gaming hours. Sony acknowledged the issues in a post on Friday night, stating that it was “aware some users might be currently experiencing issues with PSN.” However, the company provided minimal communication throughout the outage, leading to criticism from the gaming community.
The outage impacted popular games such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, Roblox, and Marvel Rivals. It also coincided with the availability of a beta version of the highly anticipated game Monster Hunter Wild and a double XP event for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Reports of players regaining access started to surface on Saturday afternoon, with the PlayStation status page showing all systems back online by the evening.
Some users discovered a workaround for playing downloaded titles during the outage by restoring licenses through the console’s settings menu.
PSN outage disrupts online gameplay
In response to the outage, Sony issued an apology and a make-good offer to affected users.
PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional five days of service to compensate for the inconvenience. The development team behind Marvel Rivals also acknowledged the outage’s impact on gameplay and promised to work with PlayStation to restore functionality as soon as possible. As a small consolation, Krispy Kreme offered free Original Glazed Donuts to gamers during the outage.
For Destiny 2 players, Bungie announced an additional Sundered Doctrine Contest Mode weekend for all platforms to make up for lost gaming time. Currently, most users are back online, although Sony has not explained the cause behind the “operational issue” that led to the outage. The incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities of online services and their impact on the global gaming community.
