Mario Kart World, the highly anticipated new entry in the beloved racing franchise, is set to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. The game boasts an impressive roster of 50 racers, surpassing the 48 characters in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, including DLC additions. However, while the extensive selection offers plenty of combinations and customization options with alternate outfits for each character, it also brings unforeseen drawbacks.
One key issue is the inclusion of too many obscure and less significant characters. While familiar faces like Mario, Luigi, and Monty Mole make their expected appearances, many other racers are unknown to players. Characters such as the spikey orange balls or the American Football dinosaur creatures from Super Mario Party lack the identity and recognition needed to feel significant.
The exclusion of notable DLC characters from past games like Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda further contributes to the roster feeling incomplete. The expanded multiverse roster in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which drew characters from various Nintendo franchises, provided a unique and engaging experience that is missing here.
Racer roster lacks familiar characters
Nintendo’s decision to include a vast array of lesser-known characters instead of iconic figures feels like a missed opportunity. Adding these minor characters, which required significant animation and modeling effort, might have diverted resources from more innovative gameplay features. For instance, incorporating unique abilities tailored to each character could have transformed the game into the first “Hero Racer,” giving characters special abilities reflecting their personalities and skills from other Nintendo games.
This might have introduced fresh strategic elements to the game. Mario Kart World’s extensive character roster may seem impressive at first glance, but it fails to leverage Nintendo’s vast library of beloved characters and feels random and disconnected. While the game offers plenty of new gameplay modes, it does not fully capitalize on the potential for unique character abilities, leaving room for future improvements.
Whether this will impact its success remains to be seen, but as it stands, Mario Kart World’s character lineup feels like a wasted opportunity. The game is set to release on June 5, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, offering both local and online multiplayer.
