BlackBerry’s QNX division and Vector Informatik GmbH have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a Foundational Vehicle Software Platform. This platform aims to accelerate the development of software-defined vehicles and simplify the integration of automotive software. The platform will combine Vector’s safe middleware technology with QNX’s safety-certified operating system.

It can also include TTTech Auto’s MotionWise Schedule, a deterministic, time-triggered scheduling algorithm. This provides more flexibility in scheduling platform components and applications. The goal is to eliminate duplicative software efforts, enabling automakers to focus on delivering unique in-vehicle experiences more quickly.

The platform prioritizes performance, safety, and user-friendliness. It aligns with key industry standards to ensure long-term ecosystem compatibility. The automotive industry is at a tipping point, where software complexity threatens to outpace innovation,” said John Wall, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Product, Engineering, and Services at QNX.

By joining forces with Vector, we’re removing significant friction from the development process and empowering OEMs to focus on what truly matters – creating transformative driving experiences for their customers.

An Early Access version of the platform will be available to selected partners later this year for early prototyping and feedback. A certified release is planned for the end of 2026, adhering to the highest functional safety and cybersecurity standards.

Foundational vehicle software initiative

QNX and Vector, along with TTTech Auto, will demonstrate the platform in Ludwigsburg on June 24-25. QNX has also announced its role as the foundational operating system for the Eclipse Safe Open Vehicle Core (S-CORE) project. This open-source initiative brings together major automakers, suppliers, and technology partners to develop a core stack for software-defined vehicles.

QNX SDP 8.0 will support the initial reference platform, offering core functionalities such as application orchestration, inter-process communication, and logging & persistency. This is made possible through the QNX Everywhere initiative, which provides free access to QNX SDP 8.0 for non-commercial use. “Embracing our role as the foundational operating system for the Eclipse S-CORE Project is a testament to QNX’s trusted reputation within the automotive industry,” said John Wall.

This milestone benefits OEMs by enabling easy access to QNX 8 software for advanced prototyping, accelerating development cycles.”

Despite these developments, BlackBerry’s stock valuation is expected to remain at a discount due to the company’s conservative guidance. Analysts suggest that the market remains cautious as BlackBerry shifts its focus from legacy hardware to a greater emphasis on software and cybersecurity. BlackBerry’s recent quarterly earnings were in line with expectations, but the forward guidance provided by the company’s executives was notably conservative.

Management has highlighted macroeconomic uncertainties and their potential impact on business operations as reasons for their cautious outlook. Analysts remain optimistic about BlackBerry’s long-term prospects, believing that the company’s investments in software innovation and strategic partnerships could pay off in the future. However, the benefits of this strategy will take time to materialize, and the stock’s valuation will eventually reflect its true potential.
