SEGA and mobile developer Rovio Entertainment announced Sonic Rumble in May as a Sonic the Hedgehog-themed take on online multiplayer party games. The game is reminiscent of Fall Guys and requires players to race through colorful obstacle courses as toy-like versions of Sonic characters. In a recent interview, Sonic Rumble Director Makoto Tase and Sonic Team Head Takashi Iizuka revealed that the game will not feature pay-to-win mechanics.

Tase explained, “Monetisation models using gacha mechanics have not been very successful when it comes to games targeting worldwide audiences of all ages, so we didn’t think it was the right choice for this project.”

Instead, Sonic Rumble will offer a more straightforward unlocking system. This includes a daily free draw feature and a Ring Shop where players can spend in-game Rings on cosmetics. Tase assured that this system is designed to ensure players are not compelled to spend real money to gain advantages.

Sonic Rumble avoids pay-to-win mechanics

Iizuka elaborated that the decision to exclude pay-to-win elements is rooted in their divisiveness in Western territories. “In the Japanese and Asian markets, it’s common to have to spend tens of thousands of yen in a game until you draw a rare character,” he remarked.

“But this is not the case in the global market, especially for an action game like Sonic Rumble, where players should be able to enjoy the game on an equal footing.”

Sonic Rumble will still feature a Battle Pass, providing access to new character skins and emotes. The game is set to launch on mobile and PC this winter, engaging players in 32-player races and scrambles to collect the most Rings. While no console versions have been announced, there is speculation the game might eventually find its way to platforms like the Nintendo Switch.

As the launch approaches, players are eager to see how these changes will impact Sonic Rumble’s reception in the international market. The game aims to offer a fresh take on the Sonic franchise and mobile gaming, aligned with contemporary player tastes and preferences.
