Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware, has confirmed receiving a buyout offer from Sony Group Inc. However, the company insists that no decision has been made regarding the sale. In an official statement, Kadokawa’s CEO, Yoshinori Natsuno, addressed the recent articles surrounding the potential acquisition.

He clarified, “The Company has received an initial letter of intent to acquire the Company’s shares, but no decision has been made at this time. If there are any facts that should be announced in the future, we will make an announcement in a timely and appropriate manner.”

Sony has declined to comment on the matter. Kadokawa’s business portfolio extends into multiple entertainment sectors that align well with Sony’s offerings, including anime, manga, television, and film.

Kadokawa is a prolific publisher in these areas, and with Sony already owning anime streamers Crunchyroll and Funimation, the acquisition would bolster Sony’s entertainment ecosystem. Apart from FromSoftware, developer of popular titles like Dark Souls and Armored Core, Kadokawa also owns other notable game developers such as Danganronpa’s Spike Chunsoft, Octopath Traveler’s Acquire, and Gotcha Gotcha Games. Kadokawa holds a 70% stake in FromSoftware, while Sony already owns approximately 14%, and Tencent owns around 16%.

Sony’s interest in Kadokawa

Piers Harding-Rolls, Research Director at Ampere Analysis, provided insights on the potential deal’s relevance. “Sony’s interest in Kadokawa’s games publisher FromSoftware was made more concrete in 2022 when it acquired a roughly 14% share of the company following its long-time collaboration.

At the time, Sony mentioned a broader interest in cross-media development of anime and games IP to support its other media businesses.”

Harding-Rolls added that the acquisition environment has changed dramatically over the past two years, but Sony continues to look for opportunities that enhance its growth, strengthen its intellectual property portfolio, and provide strategic value. This news comes amid a challenging year for Sony’s gaming business, which has experienced significant layoffs and the closure of several studios. In February, Sony announced a round of layoffs impacting 900 staff, or about 8% of its global PlayStation workforce, affecting studios such as Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and Firesprite.

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra has made a bold statement regarding Sony’s potential acquisition of FromSoftware. Ybarra expressed that if Sony successfully purchases FromSoftware, it would be “probably a top 2 acquisition in video gaming in the last 15+ years if not ever,” comparing it to Microsoft’s acquisition of Minecraft for $2.5 billion. “The only thing bigger would be buying Valve or Nintendo,” Ybarra added, highlighting the significance of such an acquisition.

He emphasized the impact FromSoftware has had with its AAA and epic games, noting that such a purchase would be monumental in gaming history. The gaming community will undoubtedly watch closely as more details emerge about this potential deal and its ramifications for both the gaming and media industries.
