Sony has expressed interest in acquiring shares in Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware and Spike Chunsoft. Kadokawa’s CEO Takeshi Natsuno said the company received an initial letter of intent to acquire shares, but no decision has been made yet. “If there are any facts that should be announced in the future, we will make an announcement in a timely and appropriate manner,” Natsuno stated.

Reuters reported ongoing talks between the two firms, citing two anonymous sources. After these reports, Kadokawa’s shares surged to an all-time high. Kadokawa’s portfolio includes FromSoftware, Spike Chunsoft, Octopath Traveler co-developer Acquire, and RPG Maker firm Gotcha Gotcha Games.

The potential acquisition shows Sony’s continued investment in gaming, but the outcome of the talks is still uncertain.

Sony explores Kadokawa acquisition possibilities

Ex-Blizzard boss Mike Ybarra commented on the potential deal, saying it would be “probably a top 2 acquisition in video gaming in the last 15+ years if not ever.” He referenced Microsoft’s $2.5 billion purchase of Minecraft as the other significant acquisition.

Ybarra called FromSoftware an “incredible” developer, praising their consistent release of high-quality, AAA titles. The only thing bigger would be buying Valve or Nintendo. And I don’t see either of those happening in any scenario,” he added.

While the market seems optimistic about the potential deal, some gamers have concerns. They worry about possible layoffs, which have happened with past Sony acquisitions. Another major concern is that FromSoftware’s titles could become exclusive to PlayStation, which would greatly impact PC players.

The industry and gaming community are eagerly waiting for more news on this potential acquisition, which could have a big impact on the future of gaming.
