Starlink Direct to Cell service launches

SpaceX’s Starlink Direct to Cell service has seen significant growth since its first launch in 2024. The constellation is now nearly ten times larger than other operators pursuing similar capabilities. Starlink received FCC approval in November, but began operations before obtaining the license.

The service provided critical communication in states affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Currently partnered with T-Mobile, SpaceX aims to work with at least one carrier in each country and expand partnerships in the US. Direct to Cell is expected to improve substantially in the coming years due to more satellites and better technology.

Elon Musk’s Starlink is set to enable voice calls on regular smartphones from virtually anywhere on Earth. The Direct-to-Cell feature uses Starlink’s satellite network, requiring no device modifications for LTE-compatible phones. SpaceX confirms the service works across urban and rural areas, indoors and outdoors, using the PCS G Block spectrum.

Starlink expands communication capabilities

Any LTE smartphone will be compatible, even older models. Users can send customizable messages through preferred platforms, which could be life-saving in emergencies.

The service offers reliable communication where traditional networks struggle. SpaceX plans a commercial package, with potential future expansions including IoT support, improved voice, and web browsing. Starlink aims to address the lack of coverage in many regions worldwide.

T-Mobile has started sending Starlink Beta invites to Android and iOS users. The service will initially allow SMS via satellites in remote locations, with plans for calling and comprehensive data later. Invites have been reported for iPhone 15 Pro, Galaxy S24+, Z Fold 6, and possibly Pixel 9 Pro.

Samsung users can find “Satellite Networks” settings, while iPhone owners have a “Cellular” option for their SIM card. Interested users can sign up and await an invitation as the rollout continues.
