Terri Burns, formerly the youngest partner at GV, is breaking records and boundaries with her recently launched venture firm, Type Capital. As one of the few Black women leading venture firms, Burns is both setting an impressive example and addressing the venture capital industry’s diversity gap. Type Capital focuses on investing in and supporting early-stage startups, shedding light on these young business endeavors’ incredible potential.
Burns’ journey in venture capitalism started at just 26 years old when she joined GV and became its youngest and first Black female partner. Prior to this achievement, she was an associate product manager at Twitter, a Kauffman Fellow at NYU, and, as of 2021, the youngest member of NYU’s board of trustees.
Terri Burns: Bridging the diversity gap in venture capitalism
Her unique industry insight and dedicated work ethic have sculpted her into a formidable entrepreneur.
Her contributions at GV, including investments in successful startups like social app HAGS and wellness app Balance, demonstrate her ability to identify potential and contribute to its growth. For instance, the financial tech company Branch, under her guidance, eventually sold to Facebook, and WorkLife, a remote work solution provider, was bought by Cisco due to Burns’s strategic investments.
Another testament to Burns’ profound business acumen is her work with Partiful, a startup that has flourished under her strategic planning, garnering over $20 million in investments. Burns’ forward-thinking approach is strongly underpinned by data-driven analysis and a keen intuition for market trends.
Apart from her work in venture capitalism, Burns is an angel investor, co-founder of an investment group, and strong supporter of tech innovation. She has supported at least 11 companies, Clubhouse included and continues to seek promising businesses in which to invest. Her impressive strategic expertise and financial acumen have proven valuable to startups aiming to scale.
With her sights primarily set on Gen-Z entrepreneurs, digital consumer firms, developer tools, and AI technologies, Burns aims to be the first investor for many promising startups, leveraging her extensive network to offer them unparalleled growth opportunities.
