The Velvet Sundown sparks AI music debate

The indie band The Velvet Sundown has taken Spotify by storm, amassing over 850,000 monthly listeners in just a few weeks. However, their sudden rise to fame has sparked a heated debate about the authenticity of their music and whether it is generated by artificial intelligence. Music producer Rick Beato, who has over 5 million YouTube subscribers, became suspicious when analyzing one of the band’s tracks.

He identified “artifacts” in the song that are often indicative of AI-generated music. “This is having a lot of problems, and I suspect that it may be because this is an AI track,” Beato said. The Velvet Sundown first appeared on social media in June, promoting a mission of “Saving Modern Rock.” However, their uncannily perfect promotional images and rapid release of songs have led many to speculate about AI involvement.

On social media and Spotify, where the band has a “Verified Artist” badge, The Velvet Sundown has teased an upcoming album, “Paper Sun Rebellion.” They have also addressed the doubts about their origins with cryptic messages, such as “You believed the lie, and danced to it anyway.”

Despite claims of authenticity, skepticism persists. A person initially claiming to represent the band eventually admitted it was a hoax.

Skepticism over AI-created tracks

The Velvet Sundown disavowed any connection to this individual, stating on Instagram, “He does not represent us, speak for us, or have any connection to this project.”

Music streaming service Deezer, which uses tools to identify AI-generated content, found that all tracks by The Velvet Sundown were created using AI. Deezer’s CEO, Alexis Lanternier, emphasized the importance of proper remuneration for human artists and maintaining transparency about AI-generated content on their platform. The infiltration of AI into the music industry has raised ethical concerns about the devaluation of human creativity.

Artists like Kristian Heironimus of the band Velvet Meadow (not to be confused with The Velvet Sundown) describe the situation as disheartening. Heironimus noted similarities between his band and The Velvet Sundown, adding that the AI-generated tracks lacked the soul that comes from human creation. Suno CEO Mikey Shulman and Lanternier of Deezer agree that while AI can enhance music production, the industry must ensure that artists receive fair compensation and that their creative stories are preserved.

The discourse reflects a broader conversation about authenticity, artist identity, and the trajectory of music in the age of AI. As The Velvet Sundown continues to captivate and perplex audiences, the band’s identity remains a focal point in discussions about the future of music and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in creative sectors.
