President Donald Trump’s tariff policies have sparked a firestorm of criticism from his own allies and supporters, including wealthy donors and conservative media figures. The escalating trade war with China has increased tariffs and counter-tariffs, leading to strained negotiations and market volatility. Billionaire hedge fund investor Bill Ackman expressed concerns about the severe negative consequences of the tariffs for the country and its citizens.
Jamie Dimon, CEO of J.P. Morgan, remarked, “Whether or not the tariff menu causes a recession remains in question, but it will slow down growth.
Elon Musk privately urged Trump not to proceed with the sky-high tariffs and has since gone public, advocating for a zero-tariff situation between Europe and North America to create a free trade zone. Musk also criticized Peter Navarro, one of the staunchest supporters of the tariffs within the administration, labeling him as “truly a moron,” “dumber than a sack of bricks,” and “Peter Navarrdo.
The trade war has sparked reactions from various geopolitical players. Israel, an ally with no levies on the U.S., was nonetheless hit with a 17% tariff.
Trump’s tariff backlash escalates
Meanwhile, China, America’s biggest adversary in this scenario, hit back with a 34% tariff on U.S. goods after Trump imposed a 54% tariff on Beijing. Media blunders have added to the volatility, with a false Bloomberg report suggesting that Kevin Hassett, director of the White House Economic Council, said Trump was considering a 90-day pause on tariffs for all countries except China.
This incorrect report briefly buoyed the stock market before Reuters admitted its error, and CNBC corrected the misinformation on air. Meghan McCain criticized the media’s handling of the economic situation, highlighting the disparity between wealthy media personalities and ordinary families directly affected by the economic downturn. As the situation escalates, White House officials claim that 70 countries have been in touch, seeking negotiated settlements.
Trump could potentially leverage these discussions to declare a resolution to the trade war and claim victory. However, the Constitution grants Congress the authority over tariffs, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
