U.S. must bolster AI efforts against China

Alexandr Wang, the world’s youngest self-made billionaire and CEO of the $14 billion company Scale AI, has become one of the most important voices on artificial intelligence. He urges that the U.S. must intensify its efforts to maintain a competitive edge over China in the AI race. “The Chinese Communist Party has enacted a whole-of-government approach to leading in AI — an AI master plan,” Wang emphasized.

They aim to be the leader by 2030, integrating their economy, government, and every part of Chinese society to ensure they come out ahead.” He expressed concerns about the implications of China’s potential AI dominance, particularly in military and cyber operations. Wang, who sees a narrow window — one to two years — for the U.S. to secure its lead in AI, has captured the attention of Congressmen, CEOs, and celebrities. Since moving to San Francisco nearly a decade ago, Wang has become a fixture in Silicon Valley as well as at global events like the Allen & Company Conference in Sun Valley and the Paris AI Summit, where world leaders seek his counsel.

Wang is actively involved in shaping the U.S. approach to AI and believes the current administration is keenly focused on ensuring American leadership in this sector. This week, after testifying before the House Energy and Commerce Committee and presenting his vision for America’s AI strategy, Wang discussed why this moment is so critical. The competition with China is neck-and-neck on algorithms, and the U.S. is falling behind on data.

The United States needs a strategy for data dominance,” Wang stated.

U.S. eyes AI for national security

We need an approach both in the public and private sectors to win on data.” One major proposal is to establish an information reserve to allow data sharing between agencies, aiding AI training and integration into government operations to streamline processes and strengthen national security.

Wang has advocated for integrating AI into federal processes to enhance efficiency. For instance, Scale AI, which Wang founded in 2016 at the age of 19, works with the Department of Defense to use AI for military planning and wargaming. When Scale began collaborating with the Department of Defense, it sparked controversy in Silicon Valley.

Wang recalls, “We were a bit of a pariah. Now, there’s a clear recognition and moral imperative that we need to be utilizing AI to support our warfighters and our national security mission.” This shift reflects a broader evolution in the tech industry’s role in global affairs. Wang underscores the importance of advancing AI not just for national security but also for broader economic benefits.

He notes that around 20% of Scale’s AI training jobs are based in rural areas, providing valuable employment opportunities. Raised by two scientists in Los Alamos, New Mexico, the birthplace of the Manhattan Project, Wang’s background instilled in him the critical role of technology in national security. He firmly believes that American leadership in science and technology is vital for maintaining the country’s position in the global order.
