Valve, the company behind popular games like Half-Life and Counter-Strike, has released updates for several of its older titles. These updates aim to improve performance and fix issues, especially for Linux players. Counter-Strike: Source, released in 2004, received a significant update.
The game now runs on the 64-bit version of the Source engine, which allows it to use more than 4GB of RAM, making it more stable and running better. The update also adds a borderless windowed display option and changes the user interface.
These changes will improve the game’s appearance on high-resolution displays and multi-monitor setups. Around 14,000 players still regularly play Counter-Strike: Source. Many well-known esports players, like Richard “Shox” Papillon and Adam “Friberg” Friberg, played the game early in their careers.
The update is good news for both current players and those who have fond memories of the game. Other classic Valve games also received updates. These include Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, and Half-Life Deathmatch: Source.
Valve improves classic games for Linux
The updates for these games are similar to those for Counter-Strike: Source. They aim to improve performance and make the games more enjoyable for today’s players.
Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 received small updates on February 6th. These updates fixed a problem causing the games to crash on Linux computers. Half-Life 2 also received an update on February 11th. This update fixed a crashing issue on Linux and changed the game’s translations. Left 4 Dead received an update on February 17th that fixed some exploits players used to crash servers. These updates show that Valve still cares about its older games.
Even though the updates are small, they are essential for keeping the games working well. Valve’s newer games, like Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2, always get updates. So it’s nice to see the company also taking care of its classic titles.
The updates will improve the games for old fans and new players who want to try them out.
