Volvo is rolling out a major software update to its infotainment systems in 2.5 million vehicles worldwide. The update will be available for all models running on the Android operating system from 2020 onwards, including the EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, V90, V90 Cross Country, and XC90 models. The update aims to enhance the user experience with a redesigned home screen and easier access to frequently used apps.

The redesigned home screen places apps such as Google Maps, CarPlay, and Bluetooth controls right on the home screen. A navigation bar at the bottom of the screen displays recently used apps and includes quick toggles for activating exterior cameras, aiding in parking and maneuvering through tight spaces. Anders Bell, Chief Engineering & Technology Officer at Volvo Cars, said during a roundtable discussion that the new technology stack was developed to benefit older models as well.

“We can take that work, port it all the way back to the old Intel hardware, and get a great experience and modern feel in two and a half million cars,” Bell explained. Many of these upgrades were made following customer feedback.

For instance, selecting drive modes without navigating deep into menus is now easier. Bell emphasized that Volvo was moving away from physical buttons to touchscreen integration to provide continuous upgrades based on customer feedback. Erik Severinson, Chief of Product and Strategy at Volvo Cars, emphasised the importance of the software, saying, “Our new-generation user experience will deliver a significant improvement in customer experience and is an important step in our journey to deliver human-centric technology solutions to our customers.” He added that the company will continue to refine the software through over-the-air updates to meet evolving customer needs.

The update will be sent out to the vehicles over the air at no cost to the owners starting next year. This update is a significant step in integrating cutting-edge technology into Volvo’s automotive lineup, enriching the driving experience for millions of owners.
