The James Webb Space Telescope has confirmed that the universe is expanding faster than previously thought. The telescope’s data shows that the expansion rate is about 8% faster than scientists expected. This finding deepens a mystery known as the Hubble Tension.
The Hubble Tension refers to the difference between the rate of expansion measured by the Hubble Space Telescope and the rate predicted by current theories. Adam Riess, an astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University, led the recent study. He said, “This is the largest sample of Webb Telescope data—its first two years in space—and it confirms the puzzling finding from the Hubble Space Telescope that we have been wrestling with for a decade—the universe is now expanding faster than our best theories can explain.
Riess and his team used three methods to measure distances from Earth to galaxies.
They looked at a type of pulsating star called Cepheids. The measurements from Webb matched those from Hubble, which adds credibility to the findings. According to the standard model of cosmology, the universe’s expansion rate should be about 67 to 68 kilometers per second per megaparsec.
Webb confirms expansion rate mystery
However, data from both Hubble and Webb suggest a rate averaging around 73, with a range of about 70 to 76 kilometers per second per megaparsec. This discrepancy has existed since scientists discovered in 1998 that the universe’s expansion was accelerating.
They think this acceleration is likely due to dark energy. To solve the Hubble Tension, Riess said, “We need more data to better characterize this clue.”
Precisely what size is it (the discrepancy)? Is the mismatch at the lower end—4-5%—or the higher end—10-12%—of what the current data allows? Over what range of cosmic time is it present?
These will further inform ideas.”
These findings show that there is still much we don’t know about the universe. Scientists will keep investigating to try to understand what is causing it to expand faster than expected.
