World faces urgent climate action imperative

Urgent Climate Change
Urgent Climate

The world is not on track to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, despite some progress in transitioning away from fossil fuels. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that the share of fossil fuels in the global energy mix has decreased from 82% in 2013 to 80% in 2023. However, this pace of change is insufficient to prevent significant shifts in the global climate.

Under current policies, the IEA projects that fossil fuels will still generate more than half of all energy by 2050. To meet the 1.5°C target with a 50% probability, a faster transition to net zero emissions by 2050 is necessary. Adair Turner, chair of the Energy Transitions Commission, emphasizes the need for urgency, stating that while a zero-carbon economy is inevitable, we must move faster to avoid being too late.

Technological advancements in renewables and energy storage have made clean electricity more affordable, with China playing a pivotal role in reducing solar technology costs.

Global shift to clean energy

However, economic factors also play a significant role.

A study from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research suggests that the global economy could contract by 11-29% by 2050 due to climate change, compared to a scenario without it. The IEA indicates that investment in clean energy supply needs to double in high-income countries and China between now and 2035 to make net zero emissions achievable. In developing countries (excluding China), investment needs to increase sevenfold, which poses a significant challenge given their financial constraints and high borrowing costs.

Political will and international cooperation are crucial to address the collective action problem of climate change. Ideological resistance, vested interests in the fossil fuel industry, and reluctance to disrupt established lifestyles are significant barriers to decisive action. The upcoming COP29 climate conference in Baku will be a critical opportunity for world leaders to recommit to more ambitious climate targets and implement effective strategies.

Without timely and substantial action, the world faces significant climate-related challenges, a tragic and unnecessary outcome.
