Microsoft recently announced the layoff of 9,000 employees as part of its $80 billion investment in artificial intelligence. In the wake of this news, Matt Turnbull, an executive producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing, faced backlash for suggesting that laid-off workers use AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot to cope with their emotions and job loss. In a now-deleted LinkedIn post, Turnbull wrote, “These are really challenging times, and if you’re navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you’re not alone and you don’t have to go it alone.” He shared that he had been experimenting with AI tools to help alleviate the emotional and cognitive load associated with job loss.

Turnbull provided prompts for using AI as a virtual counselor, suggesting that it could assist with career planning, resume building, networking, and gaining emotional clarity. He recommended asking the AI, “I’m struggling with impostor syndrome after being laid off. Can you help me reframe this experience in a way that reminds me what I’m good at?”

The advice was met with widespread criticism on social media, with many users finding it tone-deaf and insensitive.

Layoff support sparks backlash

One user commented, “Anyone who tells people who were fired to talk to a computer chat algorithm for therapy is insane.” Gamers were particularly vocal, calling Turnbull’s advice one of “the most tone-deaf and cruelest things” they had ever seen. The controversy led to Turnbull deleting his post, highlighting the sensitivity required when addressing layoffs in the tech industry.

It serves as a reminder of the emotional complexities surrounding job loss and the importance of empathetic communication during corporate restructuring. Microsoft’s layoffs are expected to affect several divisions, including the Xbox video gaming unit. The company has been investing heavily in AI, spending $80 billion on data centers to train AI models.

The cuts represent about 4% of Microsoft’s 228,000-strong global workforce.
