In another sign of the growing popularity of container technology, the CoreOS Linux distribution has set up an online repository for Docker. Like the GitHub code repository, the new Docker repository will allow developers to post and publicly share their Docker containers for free, or they can pay a fee for a private repository. In addition, CoreOS premium support customers will have access to a version of the repository that they can run in-house.
CoreOS is a popular Linux distribution for Docker users because the operating system was specifically designed for virtualized and cloud computing environments. “The nice thing about Docker containers is that they are somewhat reusable,” said Alex Polvi, founder and CEO of CoreOS. He added that with Docker “you eliminate a whole lot of complexity by switching to bare metal and containers — you eliminate the whole hypervisor level.”
