DevOps Dominates NoSQL Deployments

When it comes to NoSQL projects, a large number of enterprises seem to be abandoning traditional IT roles and embracing DevOps instead. In a new survey, Gartner asked NoSQL users who was managing their NoSQL operations. The top answer was applications development/software engineering (38.2 percent of respondents), followed by enterprise architect (27.3 percent) and management (27.3 percent). DBAs and IT operations, the two groups who would traditionally oversee databases, accounted for just 5.5 percent and 1.8 percent of the responses, respectively.

This trend toward DevOps is generally seen as good for enterprise application development teams, but Gartner analyst Nick Heudecker cautions that there is also a downside: “Application developers may be getting what they want from NoSQL now, but cutting out the primary data stewards will result in long-term data quality and information governance challenges for the larger enterprise.”
