Although GitHub is best known for its free hosting service that is popular with open source projects, the company also offers a paid code-hosting platform for enterprises. It has just updated that platform, and GitHub Enterprise 2.5 has new features for “companies operating at massive scale,” such as those with more than 10,000 developers or those experiencing exponential growth.
New features in the code repository tool include clustering, protected branches and a caching technique that improves performance when many developers attempt to pull a branch at the same time.
Several GitHub competitors, including GitLab and Atlassian, have also recently updated their enterprise revision control solutions.
