On Tuesday night, Netflix hosted an open source open house, and a couple of hundred developers showed up. Netflix uses Amazon’s cloud computing services to host its online video services, and it has developed a number of tools for working with AWS and other clouds. In the past, it has released the source code for a number of those tools—including the popular Chaos Monkey—on GitHub. Now the firm promises to do the same for additional tools, including Denominator (a tool to manage and handle multiple DNS providers), Odin (an orchestration API that can be invoked from Jenkins and into Asgard), Conformity Monkey, Latency Monkey and Howler Monkey (a monitoring tool).
In addition, the company plans to release “recipes” for using its various cloud development tools together, as well as a launcher for the tools. “While the parts are cool and shiny, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts,” explained Netflix’s Ruslan Meshenberg.
