Only 3% of Enterprises Don’t Use Any Open Source Software

In its annual Future of Open Source Survey, Black Duck Software found that 78 percent of companies run part of their operations on open source software, 66 percent create software based on open source code,64 percent participate in open source projects, and only 3 percent don’t use open source in any way. In addition, 93 percent said their use of open source software either remained the same or increased in the past year.

Other survey findings included the following:

  • 55 percent of those surveyed believe open source software offers better security than proprietary software.
  • 58 percent of those surveyed believe open source software is more scalable than proprietary software.
  • When selecting new solutions, 45 percent of enterprises look at open source software first.
  • More than half of respondents are not satisfied that they can understand and address known security vulnerabilities in open source solutions.
