Report: Windows 8.1 Released to Manufacturing

Mary Jo Foley’s source says that Microsoft cleared Windows 8.1 (formerly codenamed “Blue”) for release to manufacturing (RTM) on August 23. However, official Microsoft channels have not yet confirmed the story.

In the past, Microsoft has provided developers and TechNet subscribers with the final code for Windows releases early, but there is some question about whether it will do so this time.

For now, news of the upcoming Windows release seems to be overshadowed by Friday’s announcement that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will be retiring within twelve months.
