According to the latest research, IT departments will spend 27 percent of their 2010 software budget on custom development. That compares to 35 percent spent on packaged applications and 37 percent spent on platform and infrastructure software.

About 1 out of 8 companies (12.5 percent), mostly smaller companies in financial services or insurance, will spend more than half of their software budget on custom development.

In addition to industry-specific applications, which nearly always require custom development, business are customizing information and knowledge management (IKM) platforms and CRM applications most frequently.
